# Screen recording

Record your screen with Screendesk and share a single link with video and diagnostics.

Record a browser tab, window, or screen, with optional microphone narration and a webcam preview.

## Choose what to record

1. Open the Screendesk extension.
2. Expand **Recording settings** using the arrow beside the recording button.
3. Choose **Tab** or **Desktop** under **Record area**.
4. Set your microphone and camera options, then check the **Mic On/Off** and **Cam On/Off** toggles.

**Tab** captures the current browser tab. **Desktop** opens Chrome's picker so you can choose a screen, window, or tab.

See [Webcam and camera preview](/screen-recorder/record-and-capture/screen-recording/webcam-and-camera-preview.md) and [Microphone and audio](/screen-recorder/record-and-capture/screen-recording/microphone-and-audio.md) for setup.

## Start and finish

Choose **Record Tab** or **Record Desktop**. For desktop recording, select the surface in Chrome's picker. The countdown then runs before capture begins.

Use the recording controls to pause, resume, or end the recording. Check the microphone state before narrating.

When you end the recording, the review screen opens. Play it back, adjust the trim range if needed, add details, and choose **Upload**.

See [Review and share](/screen-recorder/review-and-share.md) or [Drafts](/screen-recorder/review-and-share/drafts.md) if you want to finish later.

## Capture browser context

Screen recordings can include console logs, network requests, and browser environment details. These describe the browser page; recording another desktop application does not collect that application's logs.

For incognito tabs, see [Incognito session](/screen-recorder/record-and-capture/incognito-session.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.screendesk.io/screen-recorder/record-and-capture/screen-recording.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `build a script that syncs our docs to a CMS` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
